Delegate focused work to subagents
Configure a focused specialist and learn when delegation helps.
Steps and explanations
01Inspect the built-in specialists
Open Subagents and inspect the built-in research and memory assistants. Save reusable specialist roles so the main Agent can delegate work when needed.
Try it · Open Subagents and inspect the built-in entries.
02Create one focused role
Select New. Give the specialist a clear name and describe when to delegate. Start with source checking, rather than assigning every possible job.
Try it · Create source-checker and enter its purpose.
03Define the handoff
Use the System Prompt to define inputs and deliverables. Ask for sources, discrepancies, and unknowns so the main Agent can act on the findings.
Try it · Enter the source-checking instructions.
04Choose only relevant tools
Choose the tools needed for verification, then create the subagent. A listed tool still needs working configuration, so test it with a small task.
Try it · Select web_search and web_fetch, then Create.
05Delegate a bounded task
In a DeepAgents chat, delegate a specific check and ask for findings only. The main Agent remains responsible for the final response.
Try it · Ask source-checker to compare two sample sources.
06Inspect the handoff result
Expand the subagent record and inspect the result. If sources are missing or the task failed, narrow the question, add inputs, and retry.
Try it · Expand the subagent card and inspect sources and unresolved items.
07Keep delegation purposeful
Practice disabling and re-enabling the specialist. Answer simple questions directly; delegate work that is independent, substantial, and easy to hand back.
Try it · Toggle source-checker off and on, then repeat a small test.
What you will learn
Create and enable a subagent, then test a well-scoped delegation.
